As you visit each other's news blogs and have discussions, please post ideas you have for debate topics.

  1. To what extent should standardized testing (ex. 3-8 ELA/Math tests) play a role in public schools today? Is making decisions based on these scores a good idea (ex. teacher evaluation, AIS placement)?

    1. lol just give up on education right? That's what our government has seem to have done. Why not just spend millions.... err, billions on war expenses in wars with suspicious motives and forget that education exists? That's what I would do lol, it just the future of America.

  2. What should be done about rising military tensions and missile testing between the US and North Korea? How should the UN respond to North Korea's violation of its policies?

    1. As much as Our Dear Leader has done everything he can do for the loyal, obedient, full stomached people of Korea is it very apparent that an international intervention is needed. I have spoken with length about this idea with my Dear Leader who, as turns out, was born under a shooting star after his Glorious Father and kim kardashian conceived him during an Elvis Presley siting. Now to truly help the Korean poeple I think that a unification of the two countries under Big Lovie Teddy Bear (That's his pet name, mine is Prisoner 12390837) would diffuse the military tensions and ease US/Korean relations. Anyone who says otherwise is enemy of the state

    2. I recommend that our class further explores this question with the help of this set of highly knowledge filled Youtube videos.

  3. This sounds like a silly question to me, but it is highly relevant and highly important.

What rights does Russia have to the Crimea? Are their actions in that region justified, or should they be fully shut down? How should the West respond to this?

  4. NSA surveillance: What should and shouldn't be monitored, Is it ok/constitutional, ext.

  5. Is NSA surveilance acceptable? Do we have the right to keep our emails, texts, etc. private, or does the government have the right to record them in the interest of keeping us and our country safe?

I'm watching this topic explode on Fareena's blog and I think this would be GREAT to talk about in class.

  6. Should there be as much coverage on problems that are ongoing but have died down as there is currently? For instance, should the whole Malaysia airlines situation be covered nearly as much as it is (when there are so many things going on in the rest of the world that matter just as much if not more)?

  7. Does Russia want to take over the rest of ukraine, and if they do, what will the US do.

    1. The US will do Bulls droppings about the whole predicament. Even if Vlad takes over the rest of the Ukraine the US can not and will not do anything. What can they even claim? Russian Nuclear bombs? Terrorists? They can't because there is no possible explanation for an invasion. Also, we just "left" Afghanistan and the American people don't want anymore war.

  8. Is it likely, or even possible, that the pilot of the flight MH370 was behind the crash? Was it sabotage, or is it impossible to know due to lack of evidence?

    2. The last time I commented, it was removed by somebody else, but I will try to mention this again in a less harsh way.

The problem with debating this is the huge lack of information. We know almost nothing about what happened inside that jetliner after they signed off late at night on March 8th. Without the black boxes and cockpit voice recorders, we simply don't have enough information to make any sort of well-reasoned guesses about what happened with that plane. I think that anything we could debate in class wouldn't really be very productive, and it would not help change our view of the issue. I like what Ricardo said, about discussing the media attention the flight received, that could be a very successful debate topic having to do with the flight. However we cannot make any reasonable guesses about what happened to the plane until we get those black boxes, and once we do get them there will be no need to speculate any further.

However I am impressed that you did try to get some sort of discussion-worthy question about the plane up there, even if it's not really a topic that can be usefully discussed.

    1. Noah,
The topic is fine; the language is not. Please edit soon--you know better.

  10. The captain of the MV Sewol, the Korean ferry that sank on April 16th off the southwestern tip of the Korean peninsula, has come under serious criticism for leaving his ship before all the passengers were safely off. A similar incident occured twenty-eight months ago, with the grounding of the Italian cruise ship Costa Concordia, when the captain also bailed out well in advance of all passengers being safe. (He currently is in the middle of a trial for manslaughter.) How should these two captains be punished for having left hundreds of passengers for which they were responsible on sinking ships? Should captains be forced to go down with their ships if they cannot help all passengers get off?

    1. "Like" -- also, what kind of responsibility beyond legal requirements should the overseeing companies hold? This would be particularly interesting to explore with the Costa incident.
