Post Fishbowl Blog on Fahrenheit 451

THIS IS OUR LAST BLOG POST FOR THE YEAR!

Reflect on something that came up in our fishbowl discussion today.  You could write about a specific passage that was discussed or a connection to a modern issue that came up.

Whatever you choose to discuss, be sure to ground you ideas in the text (the text of the book and, if relevant, the text of any outside source).  No sweeping generalizations without text evidence and analysis!  Plan to write about 350 words -- break up paragraphs into logical chunks and proofread! Also, don't repeat what others have already written ahead of you--think for yourself!

Kite Runner seminar discussion up to chap. 14

To prepare for seminar you will need to use both the questions we came up with in class and the list of  critical lens quotes.

For the critical lens quotes: prepare notes by interpreting each quote in your own words and writing down ideas, passages, and connections from the reading. Also note relevant literary devices -- the author's use of characterization, imagery, figurative language (metaphor, personification), symbolism, irony, juxtaposition, conflict, etc.

For the questions:   prepare notes by writing ideas, connections, reflections, and noting relevant passages for each of the following questions that we came up with. Write these notes on a piece of paper you can bring with you to seminar, not on this blog.

OUR SEMINAR QUESTIONS:

1.  Should Amir's prejudice against Hazaras be blamed on Amir or his parents or his culture?

2. How did Amir's guilt shape how he developed into an adult?

3.  How did Amir and Baba's relationship evolve?  How does the setting (Afghanistan and then America) affect their relationship?

4.  What is unhealthy about Baba and Amir's relationship? Does Baba deserve Amir's adoration? Is he truly a great man? A great father?

5. What was the true relationship between Amir and Hassan?  Was it balanced?  Were they really friends?

6..  Why does Baba forgive Hassan for the crime of theft?  Would he have forgiven Amir for the staged theft?

7.  How did Baba's image change when they came to America?

8.  How are Amir and Soraya similar and different?  Who do you respect and why?

NIGHT PASSAGES

Choose one passage that wasn't presented in class--make sure it is a passage that is rich and deeply connected to important themes/motifs/issues in the book.  Follow the same process that you did in groups to think through and analyze the passage:

*  Identify the important themes/motifs/issues you see in the passage.

*  Analyze what you see Wiesel doing as a writer -- look at words choices, phrasing of sentences, and the use of figurative language, repetition, or other literary devices.  Talk about specific pieces of text within the passage

*  What ideas/perspectives/understandings or even questions is Wiesel trying to instill in the reader?  What is his purpose?

You can also include your own reflections and responses -- what you noticed about your own experience reading this part of the book.

Write about 250 - 400 words.

**Try not to pick a passage that someone else already did!  Show that you can think for yourself!

Othello fishbowl discussion prep. work directions

In order to prepare for a fishbowl discussion on Othello complete the two tasks below.

TASK #1:  Read the article entitled "Othello's Alienation" by Edward Berry.

      *  Annotate as you read -- underline, make notes (questions, comments, and connections) in the margins.
      *  On the back make a list of questions (things from the article that were confusing or that you were wondering about), ideas you got from the article, and points of agreement and/or disagreement with Berry's interpretation of the play.  Connect your questions, ideas, and arguments with page numbers from the article.
      *  Also make a list of 4-5 passages from the play worth revisiting in our discussion.

TASK # 2:  Read the MOTIF BLOG

       *  Read through the entries and notice patterns. Make a list of patterns and ideas that come to you.
       *  Pick 2 of the motifs and find evidence of that motif in the dialogue of acts 4 or 5 of the play.  Write down the quotes and page numbers.

       *   What does an examination of the motifs in the play add to our discussion of the following themes from the play (write down ideas for each): IAGO'S WEB OF MANIPULATION, OTHELLO'S TRANSFORMATION,  and THE PORTRAYAL OF WOMEN IN THE PLAY.  If there is another theme that you want to bring into the discussion, please add that here.
