Kite Runner seminar discussion up to chap. 14

To prepare for seminar you will need to use both the questions we came up with in class and the list of  critical lens quotes.

For the critical lens quotes: prepare notes by interpreting each quote in your own words and writing down ideas, passages, and connections from the reading. Also note relevant literary devices -- the author's use of characterization, imagery, figurative language (metaphor, personification), symbolism, irony, juxtaposition, conflict, etc.

For the questions:   prepare notes by writing ideas, connections, reflections, and noting relevant passages for each of the following questions that we came up with. Write these notes on a piece of paper you can bring with you to seminar, not on this blog.

OUR SEMINAR QUESTIONS:

1.  Should Amir's prejudice against Hazaras be blamed on Amir or his parents or his culture?

2. How did Amir's guilt shape how he developed into an adult?

3.  How did Amir and Baba's relationship evolve?  How does the setting (Afghanistan and then America) affect their relationship?

4.  What is unhealthy about Baba and Amir's relationship? Does Baba deserve Amir's adoration? Is he truly a great man? A great father?

5. What was the true relationship between Amir and Hassan?  Was it balanced?  Were they really friends?

6..  Why does Baba forgive Hassan for the crime of theft?  Would he have forgiven Amir for the staged theft?

7.  How did Baba's image change when they came to America?

8.  How are Amir and Soraya similar and different?  Who do you respect and why?
